At it’s most basic level, the waterRIDE™ environment was designed to allow users to “get at” their datasets, irrespective of the users “technical” background.

Flood modelling is a highly technical and complex process, involving significant time and resources.

Traditionally, model results are provided to Government Agencies as reports (both hard and soft copy), and usually as processed, static GIS surfaces. Whilst this information is valuable, it is usually difficult to digest and is of restricted use in day to day operations, with significant value left “idle” in the raw model outputs.

Often, the end users of the outputs of the flood modelling process do not always have a flood modelling background or skills in the modelling software, and hence the raw model results are frequently not used.

However, there is a wealth of information available in the underlying model results, including the entire time-varying flood behaviour!

At it’s most basic level, the waterRIDE™ environment was designed to allow users to “get at” their datasets, irrespective of the users “technical” background. Why should you need to be a flood modeller to access the flood modelling results you paid for?

At a more sophisticated level, the waterRIDE™ environment provides a powerful means for understanding the impact of the modelling (ie how does this flood modelling affect the community?).

The team of engineering programmers and flood modellers at WorleyParsons have developed waterRIDE™ FLOOD Manager (and Viewer) to provide users with a dedicated floodplain management tool for interrogating their full time-varying model results set from any model, in a live GIS system, a feature unique to the waterRIDE™ environment.

It allows government agencies to leverage their investment in, and to get more value from their floodplain modelling results, regardless of the model type used. For example, models currently supported include (both 1D and 2D): TUFLOW, TUFLOW FV, MIKE11/21/FLOOD/SHE, RMA2, InfoWorks RS, Isis 2D, SOBEK, DELFT 3D, FLS, time-varying ASCII grid output, HEC-RAS, XP-STORM, EXTRAN (XP-SWMM), DRAINS overland flow, ESTRY, ANUGA, ICPR and even hard copy results.

Some of the capability available in waterRIDE™ that is applicable to Government Agencies includes:

Interrogate your flood data – easily extract water levels, flood depths, flood hazards, velocities, and VxD at anylocation on the floodplain, without the need to be a flood modeller or having the flood modelling software available!

Utilise Investment in LiDAR – waterRIDE™ drapes your model results onto your fine scale LiDAR (or survey) based DEM to enhance determination of flood extents, depths and hazards.

Floodplain Mapping – easily create flood extent maps, flood hazard maps, and flood planning maps, including surface smoothing for enhanced presentation.

Council Wide Access – waterRIDE™ can be used to provide access to flood information across an agency (if desired).

Simplified Access to Flood Information – the waterRIDE™ interface is simple to use, presenting complicated flood information in a visually appealing and easy to understand manner. Non technical people (including the community) can readily understand flooding issues (this is particularly true for 1D model results).

Quality Assurance in Providing Flood Information – waterRIDE™ provides Government Agencies with a standard method of interrogating flood information and determining flood levels, thereby ensuring consistency in issuing flood data.

Automated Flood Certificates – ensure fast, consistent,  and quality controlled flood information is issued at the click of a button

Common Interface To Models  waterRIDE™ provides a common interface to the results of many different hydraulic models. All your model results look the same, regardless of the model type.

Linking Flood Data With GIS – easily integrate flooding data with GIS datasets (eg depth over floor flooding, depth over evacuation routes). Export results to GIS platforms such as MapInfo and ESRI’s ArcGIS.

Community Education  waterRIDE™ can be used to clearly illustrate flooding issues to the community in a highly visual manner they can understand.

Easy Hydraulic Analysis  waterRIDE™ facilitates easy analysis of hydraulic results including flood hazard analysis, flood damage assessment and can assist in floodway definition and categorisation.

Emergency Management – the unique time varying analysis capability and flood forecasting features of waterRIDE™ provide essential information for flood emergency planning and evacuation management, including real-time flood forecasting.
